English — The desk and cabinet analogy
Imagine studying with open books on a desk and other books filed in a cabinet. Use the desk to picture RAM and the cabinet to picture storage. This is a teaching analogy, not a literal description of computer internals.
RAM provides temporary working space for data currently in use. Ordinary system RAM needs power to retain its contents. An SSD or HDD holds saved files when the computer is turned off.
Practice: draw two columns on paper. Label them “current work” and “saved files.” Pick one of your own projects and describe what belongs on its working desk and what you would file away. Explain your answer to a friend without relying on the acronyms.
Build a useful routine: save as you work, then keep a separate recovery copy of important files. A file on your only drive is not yet a backup. Knowing which term you mean also makes it easier to ask clear questions about your computer.
